Scholarships

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education facilitates the process of scholarships/fellowships which are offered by the foreign countries under Cultural/Educational Exchange Programmes. Most of the scholarships are for Research, Master’s and Doctoral studies. The students are required to apply online

General Guidelines

On receipt of offer of scholarship, the same is advertised on Department’s website giving all the details regarding eligibility criteria, value of scholarship, age limit, required qualifications, experience etc. Information is also disseminated through circulars to Institutes/Universities and UGC etc. and in some cases in the leading newspapers. The subject fields for which the applications are invited, are either provided by the donor country or are chosen keeping in view the national need and facilities available in the donor country. The Ministry also administers Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship which is fully funded by the Government of India. Under this fellowship, one candidate is placed at St. Antony College, Oxford University London, for an academic year, in first instance, which may be extended for another academic year on the basis of performance of the candidate. Ministry of Human Resource Development invites online applications for scholarship offers received from China, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and UK (Commonwealth), Mexico and Italy. However, some countries invite direct applications. The scanned copy of the documents viz. marks sheet, certificate/diploma/degree, award etc. are required to be uploaded while applying online. On the basis of the applications, the candidates are shortlisted and are called for interview. A Selection Committee comprising of subject experts is constituted for interviewing the shortlisted candidates. The decision of the Selection Committee on selection of candidates is final. However, the final selection of the nominated candidates rests with the donor countries.

  • Applications from the candidates who are residing abroad, are not considered.
  • Candidates who have been abroad for study/specialization/training either on scholarship or on their own for a period exceeding six months are eligible to apply only if they have been in India for at least two consecutive years after their return from abroad on a specified date which is mentioned in the public notice for each of the scholarship/fellowship.
